Hi, Lovers of Young Adult Lit! You are invited to participate in our College of Education Young Adult Literature Book Club. We will be meeting the last Sunday of every month to discuss a new book. This book club is also part of a research study about student response to literature, specifically how readers construct understandings of gender and body within print and graphic texts. Participation in the study is not required to be part of the book club; however, I do hope you will consider contributing to the research! Participation in the study requires no additional work beyond the normal expectations of the book club. Consent forms will be distributed at the start of each session if you are interested in being included in the study.

Description of this months book via GoodReads: Anda loves Coarsegold Online, the massively-multiplayer role-playing game where she spends most of her free time. It's a place where she can be a leader, a fighter, a hero. It's a place where she can meet people from all over the world, and make friends. But things become a lot more complicated when Anda befriends a gold farmer--a poor Chinese kid whose avatar in the game illegally collects valuable objects and then sells them to players from developed countries with money to burn. This behavior is strictly against the rules in Coarsegold, but Anda soon comes to realize that questions of right and wrong are a lot less straightforward when a real person's real livelihood is at stake.

Notes:

  • The first 5 students to sign up for inclusion in the study will be eligible to get a free book. Please email nicole-a-amato@uiowa.edu for more information regarding participation in the study. Otherwise, register as required by the TLC for certificate hours.
