Presenter Panel: John Mikelson, Military Outreach Specialist; Don Rhoades, UI Veterans’ Employment Specialist; Julia Rose, Social Worker at the VA Medical Center; and Laura Boddicker, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and Veterans’ Services Representative.

Due to the lack of active military service bases in Iowa, the children and families of our military are often attending school and living in communities that may not fully be aware of their unique needs and assets. This workshop will address ways that teachers and other helping professionals can more effectively recognize their situations and develop strategies to address them. Panelists will discuss the many resources that can be mobilized to assist these families, and provide basic information about the agencies and programs that can assist in optimizing the mental health and well-being of military service members, their children and family members. The panelists include a military outreach specialist with extensive experience offering holistic resources to veterans and Army veteran, a long-term veterans’ services specialist and Army veteran, and a representative of social work and mental health services in the VA Medical Center and Army veteran, and a Navy veteran has worked extensively with the VA doing vocational rehabilitation counseling and now works with Senator Ernst as a veterans services representative.
