Thursday, March 22, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
TLC Commons (N110 LC)

Presenter: Colleen Kennedy, PhD

The first literature we learn are nursery rhymes and lullabies. Young children love the sounds of poetry, the rhythms of the meter, the security of the rhyme scheme, the playful alliteration and assonance. Hip hop, more than any other form of popular music, is all about the sound of the words, the beat of the meter, and the playfulness of creating new words. In this workshop, we will focus on formalist readings of early children's verse and pair that with formalist readings of hip hop that we can incorporate into the elementary and junior high classroom. If there is time, we may try our hand at creating new verse, too!
