The 2021 One Community, One Book selection is Halfway Home: Race, Punishment, and the Afterlife of Mass Incarceration by Dr. Reuben Jonathan Miller.

The week following the Author's Keynote, join us for a special panel moderated by Inside Out Reentry Community. The time will be spent in reflection with formerly incarcerated individuals about Dr. Miller's work and what Halfway Home in Johnson County means for us all.

As Jonathan Reuben Miller’s book “Halfway Home” points out, mass incarceration is designed to follow people home — from the effects of having lived in a dehumanizing environment to the continuing confines of life on parole; from legal discrimination in housing and job markets to widespread social stigma.  And still, people prevail!  People returning to Johnson County, IA, after incarceration will discuss some of the many challenges they face and what has helped them succeed.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact Erika Christiansen in advance at 3193353900 or erika-christiansen@uiowa.edu
