The 2018 Latinx Educational Excellence in the Midwest Conference aims to explore and advance research and programming being done around issues related to Latinx identities in classrooms, businesses, public spaces, and community organizations across the Midwestern United States. In collaboration with the Annual Latinx Youth Summit, the University of Iowa and partner organizations remain committed to elevating Latinx voices and building inclusive communities.

Call for Proposals

Faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, University staff, K-12 educators, service providers, and members of the community who examine Latinx issues in education, business, social work, public health and other related fields are invited to present and attend.  The conference organizers welcome inquiries regarding paper and presentation topics that explore an array of topics related to teaching, learning, activism, and research that include, but are not limited to:

  • Latinx issues in P-12 education
  • Latinx issues in Higher Education
  • Immigration and the Midwest
  • English Language Learners in Education
  • Undocumented Students in the Midwest
  • Latinx History (Local, National, and/or Regional)
  • Latinx in STEM
  • Afro-Latinx identities
  • Advocacy and Community Development
  • Leadership Development
  • Job and Career Preparedness
  • Transition to Career and Work
  • Latinx issues in Public Health
  • Latinx issues in Engineering

Presentation Formats

  • Paper: Single and co-authored papers based on original research that has been completed or is near completion. Papers will be organized into panels based on shared themes and topics. Presenters have the option to present papers as members of a panel or roundtable.
  • Presentation: Oral presentations may include visuals, slideshows, multimedia, and other forms of communicating one’s work. Research, conceptual, and/or practitioner-oriented projects will be considered for presentations. Presenters interested in focusing on classroom related work are encouraged to make presentations that are geared toward classroom teachers at the P-12 and higher education levels.
  • Roundtable: Single papers or themed proposals of 3-4 presenters will be considered for roundtable presentations. Roundtables are less formal opportunities to present work and engage in discussion with audience members.
  • Poster: Presentations on research that has concluded or is near conclusion will be considered. Poster presenters will be responsible for transporting their posters and providing a tripod or preferred stand for displaying their poster.

Interested presenters should submit the following using the submission link provided:

  • Author Information: Name(s), position(s), mailing address(es), phone number(s), and e-mail address(es). Please note the corresponding presenter for the submission.
  • Title of proposed paper or presentation. If you are proposing a panel or roundtable, please include a title for the panel or presentation in addition to individual titles for each presenter.
  • Presentation abstract (500 words maximum):
  • Indicate if your paper, presentation, or poster is research, conceptual, and/or practitioner oriented.
  • Intended audience (Elementary, Secondary, Higher Education, Business, Social Work, Health Care, Community, etc.).
  • A focused explanation of your work and relevance to the conference.
  • A bio of no more than 50 words for each presenter.

Travel Grants

Limited travel grants of up to $100 will be available for students traveling more than 180 miles. All presenters will be eligible to apply for awards recognizing research, teaching, and service to Latinx communities in the Midwest. Applications for travel grants will be available from August until October 1, 2018 at 2018 Latinx Conference.
