Presenter(s): Kay Ramey, Assistant Professor, Learning Sciences and Educational Psychology, and Darrell Currington, Makerspace Facilitator
Description: In this workshop, students will gain hands-on experience participating in and designing STEAM activities using vinyl cutters, laser cutters, and other subtractive manufacturing tools. For the hands-on STEAM challenge, students will get to make a vinyl cut sticker or laser cut design of their choice. They will also learn about subtractive manufacturing tools available in schools and will be provided with resources and ideas for activities they might facilitate in their classrooms. Finally, they'll have an opportunity to brainstorm their own STEAM activity with this group of tools.
Learning Goals: 1) To become familiar with a variety of makerspace tools, technologies, and materials. 2) To develop the necessary skills and mindsets for facilitating integrated STEAM learning experiences for students. 3) To learn how to design and facilitate interest-driven, authentic, inclusive, and culturally sustaining STEAM activities.
