Admission to Teacher Education programs is competitive. Meeting the minimum criteria does not ensure program admission.

Application Deadlines

  • March 1 (Fall Semester)
  • October 1 (Spring Semester)

We suggest allowing at least six weeks to complete the application process.

Admission Requirements

* Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate undergraduate applicants for admission to the Teacher Education Program must apply under the Special Consideration Policy if their University of Iowa and/or overall cumulative grade-point average is below 3.00.

Application Procedure

  1. Undergraduate applicants submit all Required Application Materials directly to:
    Office of Student Services
    College of Education
    N310 Lindquist Center
    Iowa City, Iowa 52242-1529
  2. M.A.T. or M.A.(b) degree program applicants submit forms online through the UI Office of Admission (graduate)
  3. Applications are reviewed twice each year: following deadlines of March 1 for summer or fall admission and October 1 for spring admission
  4. Applicants are notified of admission decisions by email approximately four weeks after the application deadline.
  5. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all materials (including transcripts, test scores and recommendations) are received by the Office of Education Services, N310 Lindquist Center, by the application deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

  • Transcripts from all college coursework
  • A resume of paid or volunteer work experience: include jobs, employers, and dates of employment
  • An essay on the topic:
    Please describe on a personal and professional level why you want to be a teacher, and specifically, in the particular program area to which you are applying (Elementary Education, Art Education, English Education, Foreign Language Education, Mathematics Education, Music Education, Science Education, Social Studies Education).
