The Music Education program is committed to preparing engaged and excellent music teachers, practitioners, and scholars.

The Music Education program offers undergraduate certification courses for K-12 licensure in vocal and instrumental music for students pursuing or who have completed their bachelor’s degree in music. Graduate courses for the M.A. in Music (Music Education emphasis) and the Ph.D. in Music (Music Education emphasis) degrees are also offered. Faculty members are internationally known for their innovative community engaged partnerships.

Programs

Overview

The Music Education programs prepare undergraduate students for licensure to teach music to grades K-12. Students pursuing Music Education as a major, will receive a B.A or B.F.A from the School of Music, as well as K-12 music teacher certification through the college’s Teacher Education Program.

Undergraduate Music majors seeking teacher certification will obtain a Bachelor of Music degree from the School of Music and K-12 certification through the college’s Teacher Education Program (TEP). Undergraduate Elementary Education majors may obtain a specialization in music so that they are certified to teach K-8 general music.

Note: Direct admission is available for eligible freshmen.

    The Master of Arts in Music (Music Education emphasis) in Music (Music Education emphasis) is offered through the School of Music. Entering Master's students typically hold an undergraduate degree in music, but they can pursue an M.A. plus certification. 

    The M.A. in Music Education prepares current music teachers who want to develop their professional skills (pedagogy track) or learn both professional and research skills through the research track. The M.A. + Certification is designed for those individuals who have already completed an undergraduate degree (most typically a B.A. or B.M. in music performance) and who wish to earn Iowa certification while concurrently pursuing the M.A. in music education.

    The Ph.D. program prepares candidates for positions as music education professors at colleges or universities, K-12 teachers, and music administrator positions.

    The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Music (Music Education emphasis) is offered through the School of Music.
