Admission Requirements

The admissions process is streamlined to allow busy professionals to advance their careers quickly. Applicants must meet the following minimum admission requirements for the Graduate College:

  • Complete the online application.
  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited American college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Graduate Admissions. This transcript is not needed if this degree was conferred from the University of Iowa. Official transcripts can be received via post or email. Instructions for requesting official transcripts will be listed in MyUI after the application is submitted.
  • A minimum grade-point average of 3.00, or the foreign equivalent as determined by the Office of Graduate Admissions.
  • The Teaching and Learning Master of Science (M.S.) subprogram in STEM education preferred candidates have a degree in a science or math area, science or math education, a degree in elementary education with a science or math emphasis, or professional experience in these areas. Teaching licensure/certification is recommended for the M.S. degree and required if the candidate seeks the Iowa K-12 STEM Education Specialist Endorsement.
  • Unofficial transcripts can be submitted for application review, but official transcripts must be submitted upon acceptance to the program and before the student’s first start date.
  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is required for admission to graduate programs at the University of Iowa. Students with an undergraduate GPA which is lower than 3.0 are not eligible for admission, but may be considered upon exception.
  • International applicants must also:
    • Take the TOEFL exam. Acceptable TOEFL score is a minimum of 600 (250 computer-based test or 81 internet-based test) or a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 (with no sub score lower than 6.0).
    • Pay a $100 application fee when submitting the online application

Transfer Credits

Applicants seeking to transfer graduate credits (up to 12 semester credit hours) must also provide transcripts from those regionally accredited institutions. Unofficial transcripts can be submitted for credit transfer review, but official transcripts must be submitted upon acceptance to the program and before the student’s first start date. Transfer credit requests will be reviewed for approval by the program director and the faculty lead for the course being substituted. Candidates seeking transfer credits must provide a syllabus for the course(s) completed to be used for the course review process. Courses that can be considered for transfer are science and math education and electives. Decisions regarding application of transfer credits toward coursework will be made by the program.

Application Process

Take the first step to joining the Hawkeye family! Follow the simple application process below to get started.

  1. Create an application account with an existing email and a password.
  2. Once you have created your account, you will be taken to an “Application Summary Page”
  3. The “click here” link (to select the correct application) will take you to the “Applications” page
  4. On the “Applications” page, under “Graduate & Professional Applications” choose “Graduate College” -- this program is in the Department of Teaching and Learning.
  5. Follow the step-by-step instructions to complete the “Graduate College Application for Admission.”
  6. When selecting “Department or Program” choose “Teaching and Learning (STEM Education).
  7. This program allows five flexible start dates each year. The options on the application will match the standard academic calendar. Please select the option that is closest to your desired start session.
  8. The Application Fee is waived for U.S. applicants for this program. On the “Provide Payment Information” page, please select “Request a fee waiver” for your application fee to be waived (international students will need to pay the $100 online application fee).
  9. You should be able to complete the application in one sitting, but if you do need to return later, sign in with your application account email and password on the login page to continue your application where you left off.
  10. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive email instructions on how to establish your HawkID and password, which you will use to access MyUI, our online service center for students and applicants.
  11. You will use your Admissions Profile on MyUI to upload the supporting documents required for the program.
