Effective spring 2021, the combined B.A. in elementary education with a special education subprogram and the M.A. in teaching and learning with a special education subprogram (K-8 instructional strategist I: mild/moderate; nonthesis) program is available for students. Students are able to earn both degrees in less time than it would take to complete both degrees separately.

Application Deadline

  • Fall Semester—Suggested deadline of April 1
  • Spring Semester—Suggested deadline of November 1

Admission Requirements

  • University of Iowa undergraduate student enrolled in the TEP program and pursuing a B.A. in elementary education
  • Completed at least 74 semester hours
  • A grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.25; however, the admissions committee will consider applications from those with a GPA below 3.25 with additional material (see Required Supplemental Materials section)
  • An interview may be requested

Application Procedure

  1. Create an application account to begin the graduate college application process
  2. Submit the online application to the Graduate College and pay the $60 application fee by credit card
  3. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive email instructions on how to establish your HawkID and password which you will use to access MyUI, our online service center for students and applications
  4. You will use your Admissions Profile on MyUI to upload required supplemental materials

Required Supplemental Materials

  • A statement of purpose

If GPA is below 3.25, then additional supplemental materials are required

  • NOTE: The GRE requirement has been suspended for the 2020-2021 admissions cycle only. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General test (verbal and quantitative) combined score of at least 300 (preferred)
  • Three letters of recommendation. You will be asked to give the contact information of your recommenders, including their email, on your Admissions Profile. The recommender will then get an email with instructions on how to upload the recommendation letter and/or form.


Upon admission to the program, students complete a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses their final year of undergraduate studies (i.e., senior year, semesters 7 & 8). Then, students complete one additional year of graduate courses (i.e., semesters 9 and 10). Student teaching, both elementary and special education placements, is completed the final semester, semester 10.
