Bridging academic content and English language learning to prepare Iowa teachers of English Learners.

The EL Bridge Project helps prepare science, math, and special education teachers (pre-service and in-service) to work with students who are English Language Learners (ELs).

Current Teacher Education Students

The University of Iowa’s EL Bridge Project incorporates and teaches best practices for working with students who are English Language Learners in science, mathematics, and special education.

Program Eligibility

Current University of Iowa teacher education students enrolled in one of the following programs:

  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Special Education

Program Benefits

  • K-12 ESL Endorsement
  • Knowledge to be able to meet the needs of EL students in your future classroom
  • Partial tuition support

Application Information

Applicants interested in the EL Bridge Project use the same process as those applying to the K-12 ESL Added Endorsement. The application process for this endorsement can be obtained by consulting the PDF iconGuide Sheet for the ESL Added Endorsement Program

Application Deadline

  • Fall semester entry: March 1
  • Spring semester entry: October 15

Students may also enter in the summer semester on a case-by-case basis. To be considered for summer entry, application materials must be received by March 1st.

Online Professional Development for Inservice Teachers (ELBOW)

The University of Iowa’s EL Bridge Project provides free online professional development and support for licensed teachers in science, mathematics, and special education to help them build best practices in working with English Language Learners (ELs) throughout the State of Iowa.


Licensed K-12 Teachers in the State of Iowa*:

  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • English Language Learners (ELs)
  • Special Education

*Elementary teachers with a specialization in one of these areas do qualify. Other interested parties may be given special permission to enroll on a case-by-case basis.


  • Working with English Language Learners (ELs)

Workload & Requirements

  • Approximately 3 hours per week
  • Asynchronous (no scheduled class time)
  • Weekly online discussion with fellow teachers
  • Weekly readings, videos or other media to support learning
  • Written assignments that support implementation of topics
  • Assignments are due on Tuesday every week

Credit Available

There is no cost associated with taking this workshop. One Iowa Licensure Renewal Credit ($25) is offered.
